“Apology accsssepted,” Snabla hissed, sticking his pointed nose in the air with a sniff. “For now.”

Then the kobold swiveled on one wobbly foot, chin still pointed to the sky, and went about sampling all the Tourney of Terror had to offer.

Zelli could only remember being so exhausted the evening they returned from the necromancer’s cave outside Horntree Village. She didn’t know a person could be exhausted down to the roots of their hair. When at last the first match of the Tourney was over (a narrow defeat for the flumphs, the dragons scoring thirteen to their eleven), she slumped back to the dormitories, bidding her friends good night before shouldering open the door to her room.

Only after she crossed to her own side of the chamber did she realize the door had come open too easily. Unlocked. But her roommate wasn’t there, and Zelli was always very careful about locking up their belongings. A thin shaft of moonlight pierced the window, illuminating a mess of tunics and trousers spilling from the trunk at the foot of her bed.

Quite suddenly, Zelli was fully awake and in a panic. She rushed to the tossed clothes, finding that someone had gone digging through her things. Fear tightened her throat as she searched and searched, terrified that someone had stolen the one thing that marked her as human and linked Zelli to her birth mother.

“No, no, no, no . . . ,” she whispered. “It has to be here. It can’t be gone. . . .”

Zelli was a girl of few possessions, and it did not take her long to reach the bottom of the recklessly sorted pile. Under a crumpled knit boot sock, she found it, and she sat back on her heels, clutching the little Steelstrike medallion to her chest. Allidora Steelstrike had given it to her when they met with the promise that it could summon her, if ever Zelli was in danger and needed the human adventurer’s help. Zelli didn’t know if she ever intended to use it, but the thought of losing the one thread tying her to her birth mother was unbearable.
